 Research

On March 1, 2020, the German Mass Spectrometry Society (DGMS) presented the 2020 Mattau-Herzog Award to Associate professor Yulin Qi from Tianjin University’s Institute of Surface-Earth System Science (ISESS). Dr. Qi became the first Asian awardee since this award was set up in 1988.

The Mattauch-Herzog Award was named after two pioneers in mass spectrometry, Josef Mattauch and Richard Herzog who laid the foundation of mass spectroscopic ion optics and, in 1934, presented a novel type of mass spectrometer equipped with ion optics which is well-known as the “Mattauch-Herzog-System”. The award is said to be one of the most prestigious scientific award in analytical sciences. Scientists in mass spectrometry are honored by the award under the patronage of DGMS in recognition of their significant achievements made in the early stages of their career.

Yulin Qi received his doctor’s degree from the University of Warwick in UK in 2013, where he studied data processing techniques for FTICR-MS (fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry). After working at the Saarland University and the Humboldt University in Berlin, he then applied to Tianjin University and has recently become a tenured associate professor at the ISESS in July, 2019. His research focuses on FTICR-MS and its application to environmental and natural organic compounds. Up to 2019, Qi has first-authored over 26 journal articles with a h-index of 17.
